I bought another Icom IC-706MkIIG. Why would I do that when I already own one? First, I don’t ever want to have to buy another HF rig for as long as I live. When my existing radio dies (if it dies), I’ll have a backup. And who knows, it might be in better condition than the one I’ve been using for the past 15 years, in which case my current rig will go into storage.
There’s one thing about amateur radio gear that I’ve written about previously but this is a great example of how buying good quality radios is never really a loss (except for the interest paid if using credit). The radio I bought sold for $750, which is about what they sold for brand new over a decade ago! The radio I already have would easily fetch over $700 on eBay because no one is selling ’em. I was surprised to find this one so I jumped on it. What have I got to lose? If I’m ever hard up, I can easily turn it into cash.
